I have a old laptop that truth be told can’t hold much power compared to new ones (3600mAH) so I need to get enough out of it to do my basic things so I’m going to tell you what I do for this.
1. Most important one turn the brightness to a minimal, now my Fn button doesn’t work so I have to do this a complete different way so I use PowerStrip which allows me to turn everything down and it saves a lot of power.
2. Use very little programs, if I’m on the battery i try to use just one program at a time for example I have a seperate install of firefox which has no addons or anything like this, means it uses much less resources saving my laptop power.
3. Do not use the CD/DVD drive, these consume a lot of power to avoid these you can use virtual drives such as deamon tools this will allow you to run a image file for your virtual drive. If you have a newer laptop as well you might find a button to disable the drive so using it will also help.
RAM I need more, a lot of you techy guys out their will think I’m mad only having 512MB of RAM well I don’t blame you for thinking I’m mad I would love to have more I have some RAM on my desk right now but my motherboard uses Dual Memory meaning you have to have at least 2 of the same sizes e.g. 256mb + 256mb or 512mb + 512mb if you have something like I’ve got on my desk 256mb + 512mb it will not work.
Some of you might be thinking what a pain but in all fairness I would never buy a motherboard that doesn’t have dual memory, dual memory allows you to spread the load around allowing to use it faster for example rather than having a 512mb you could have 2 x 256mb allowing you to get much better speed of accessing the RAM this can go the same for using RAID on your hard drives like with dual memory I would never go without RAID basicly RAID allows you to connect up 2 hdd’s but windows or what ever OS you use sees it as one and splits your data across the two hard drives so your hard drive runs at 7200rpm normally now times that by two and you will find yourself quite happy.
I really don’t like this date today I’ve noticed how many things I’ve been tricked into thinking for example Free Broadband by google the free broadband captured my eye so i started reading it finding that you have to flush something down the toilet now that got me thinking not about the fact its April the 1st but how cool it would be to have a internet connection from your bog.
So I went to a forum posted it then someone pointed the date out too me and it hit me the TV program must of been a April fools then still typing about this google free broadband in a forum still hasn’t hit me 5 mins later after posting i realise internet from a bog, you have to be kidding me, rushes back to forum and I try to make it look like I’m tricking them to same my self any embarrassment so if you’ve been tricked go with it ;).
Before upgrading you need to know what uses you will be using the computer for.
If you want it for just office work you won’t need a high powered computer you could get a very basic computer for a very small price, you could use onboard audio, video and network connector’s this will take more RAM space but because you will not be using so much of it for your gaming its okay.
But if you are looking for a computer to handle high quality games you will be spending a lot more money for high powered hardware and more than likely you will need nearly all new stuff, such as the main part your motherboard as if you are running a older computer it is very likely that you will not be able to run a better CPU which you would need to run high quality games then if your motherboard doesn’t accept certain parts which you used on the old motherboard you would also need to get more components, for example if you used to use SDRAM you might only be able to use DDR.
Well recently I keep thinking how I spend way way too much time on the computer and what the cause of a 18″ CRT monitor is doing too my brain you know their was so much fuss back in the 90’s it was mad, ‘you will get cancer from spending too much time in front of the PC’ but really is this true?
Well according to a post I found at PC Format a car will give you more radiation than a monitor, now that’s worried me about driving now but it really isn’t much radiation at all.
Well I thought it would be good to alert all the users about this issue, but I think now everyone is using LCD monitors etc…
