Kubuntu V6.06.1 Review.

Here is my review on Kubuntu.

Lets start with a little bit about Kubuntu, it uses a KDE Desktop Environment which compared to Ubuntu that uses Gnome (very different).

That is the main difference between Kubuntu and Ubuntu you will also find that the programs in Kubuntu are also different but you do have a package manager allowing automatic install for the programs.

The installation: Brill if you compare this to something like Microsoft Windows installation there is a massive difference, with (K)ubuntu it is a Live CD live meaning that you can run it straight from your CD-ROM instead of running it from your hard drive so its kind of like a way of letting people test it before they install it, but with this you can surf the net while your installing (K)ubuntu to your hard drive.

Now comparing this to Windows XP it looks very ugly when installing it, and you can’t do anything at the same time, so you have to sit their for 2 hours or so waiting for it to install.

So the installation i would give 4/5.

Logging in: This is newly added to my list, because you don’t really notice your login screen too much so i would like you to start paying attention to all the different login screens you can get, if you have a Gnome Linux based distro and a KDE one take a look at the difference, so here I’m going to compare Ubuntu to Kubuntu on the login screen, With Ubuntu it will only show one thing at a time for example you will see Username but not Password this annoys me.

Now with Kubuntu you have a nice login screen with Username, Password and a selection of other buttons and it looks fantastic!

Here i will give Kubuntu a 3/5.

Applications:Well as this is from a newbies point of view you have to have this review here, the applications you get with the distro are very important as you don’t really want to go looking around for applications and messing about trying to install them especially if their tar files.

First thing i noticed was no Firefox, I was very supprised but with KDE Desktop standard web browser is Konquer isn’t too bad for viewing files and folders but for web browsing it just can’t cut it, but with Linux i find all the distro’s all the applications are pritty much the same even if they have a different name.

So i would have to give this a 4/5.

Drives: Every Linux distro I’ve had this has been a large problem but this was much easier that Ubuntu at installing my ATI 9550 radeon Graphics card, i could only get it a higher resolution in wide-screen but this is the furthest I’ve gotten at installing Drivers on Linux, but I’m still disappointed so this will have to be 2/5.

Online Support: Its nothing compared to the Ubuntu Forum, there are so many members offering help and that are currently online, on the Kubuntu Forum you feel like your the only one their it feels like a ghost town so getting support was slow not sure if i even have a reply still!

So don’t expect much from the Kubuntu Forum i would say your better off asking on the Ubuntu Forum 1/5.
