Website Adverts good or bad?

If you know me you will know I’ve tried out several methods of advertising on my sites, for example Google adsence, affiliate future, amazons affiliate, adbrite, 1and1 referral and now trying to sell advertising space.

But what has made me any money 1 has made me $2 and that was 1and1’s referral advertising but this was on one of my less busy websites, yet the popular sites haven’t pulled in ANYTHING this was a big problem when using advertising which you cannot get any money out untill you earn $100.

So my new adventure is selling my own personal advertising space, as you might have noticed I actually have some new adverts around the page for sale their cheap as you can find out on the advertising space page it is currently run using openads so if someone wants a advert on this site they can pay me say a months cost once I see the money (in paypal) I will put the advert up.

Unfortunately it isn’t all automated i need to set up the adverts myself which personally I dislike as it doesn’t insure absote accuracy on the ads compared to the client putting it in.

BitLet - A bittorrent applet

Web based bittorrent client running in java bitletThe other day I came across BitLet, now I’m a big fan of bittorrent I believe it is one of the best ways to share your podcasts as once you’ve downloaded it you can then share it to the other people downloading it.

A lot of people think that P2P is a bad thing because it allows you to download music or movies but it really isn’t its a lot more something like Utorrent is a amazing client it has all these tools on it such as the encryption some ISP’s do not like clients like utorrent so it includes encryption so that the ISP’s don’t slow your downloads down.

But now if your at work or school and they don’t have a BitTorrent client visit BitLet and start the Java Applet and your ready to download.

Forum signature and avatar sales.

So someone sparked up a conversation the other day about selling links in your forum signature, so I thought what the hell even though I post on small forums might as well have a go.

So a link in my signature will cost £0.03 which is equal to around USD $0.06 per post per forum.

For a avatar I will charge £3 per month which again is USD $6.

With the avatar picture I’m thinking I should offer a link in the signature for £0.01 ($0.02) per post mainly because the avatar picture doesn’t link anywhere but it could be good for pointing out a website.

So if your interested feel free to contact me, or have any better ideas or you do this your self please comment.

I will also join a forum of your request.

Blocking Websites

Today I’ll talk about blocking websites this is a simple method and very easy to add new websites.

First you need to find the host file, if you are running WinPatrol you can find it by going to the options tab and click “view host file” or if you don’t you can find it on windows XP and Vista in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc you can just run this and it will bring up the directory.
A faster way to open it is copy this C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS and run it by going to start >> run.

Next you want to right click on the file “host” and open with notepad once this is open you can start blocking websites, so you want to block Google add this line at the bottom “127.0.0.1 google.com” you may need to add another with www. as it can be classed as another domain.

The reason i first point out using WinPatrol is because it can identify the exact location of the host file through the registry files, the file may not work because something malicious has changed the root of the host file so that it can redirect things like bank sites to other sites which are malicious WinPatrol will monitor this file for any changes as well so if you haven’t changed it, it will point out that something has changed it.

Firefox Addon: No Script.

This is one of my favorite addons and a large reason I use firefox over Opera the majority of the time, the script allows you to disable the Javascript on websites well yeah you can go to options and untick the enable javascript box but this is so much more.

Here is a screen shot of it on Jace’s website:

NoScript - No Script Firefox addon screen shot From this screen shot you can see a lot of things for example you can see all the different scripts from different sites like google analytics or mybloglog so you can allow these different scripts.

What is the need for it though, well if you know your stuff about internet security you will notice how dangerous javascript can be to your browsers it is a very dangerous hole in your computers defence, so only allowing sites you trust is a brilliant method or if your not sure you can temporarily allow the websites.

You can download it from the mozilla website here or from their own site here noscript.net.
